Yang’s Chicken Roll 杨家鸡卷

This is a recommended eatery by a few blogs. It's location is just behind the Jingtong train station which is pretty easy to find.

This is the interior of the eatery. Although the weather was hot outside, it was quite cooling to be seated inside. The eatery is not air-conditioned but there are fans.

Find a table to sit and you may start to place your order.

This is an order form which you will find on your table. If there isn't one, the boss or one of the workers will bring it to you. Write down your table number and the number of orders you would like to place for each dish. I ordered the chicken roll (鸡卷), braised pork on rice, (Lu Rou Fan / 卤肉饭) and a cup of grass jelly (仙草茶) Once done, either bring the form to the counter infront of the shop or one of the workers will collect from you. You will also pay at the same time. After which, just wait patiently for your food to arrive.

My food order

Braised Pork on Rice a.k.a. Lu Rou Fan (卤肉饭)

My first bowl of braised pork on rice in Taiwan. This is a very common and popular dish in Taiwan which one must eat.

The famous chicken roll. Although it is called chicken roll, there is actually no chicken meat inside. You will taste abit more flour. If you have eaten Ngoh Hiang, a snack popular in Singapore and Malaysia, you will roughly know how it tastes like.

So why called it chicken roll then? Here is a little history about the dish.

According to what was written, the roll is made of ingredients which include yam, onion, beancurd skin and flour. In the past, before the invention of the refrigerator, people will think of ways to keep food fresh. The early owners of the eatery used certain methods to preserve the food that were not sold for the day and wrapped the excess ingredients used for preservation in beancurd skin before deep-frying them.

Also, Chinese families in the past were too poor to buy pork, chicken or fish as offerings to the deities thus this method of offering was used.

It was only after I had my stomach filled did I notice something unique.

The owner actually converted old sewing machines into dining tables. Innovative! There will always  be interesting findings during travelling.
